Al Carns MP visits Neville Williams House in support of BCOP sensory street appeal
MP for Birmingham Selly Oak Al Carns visited Neville Williams House in Selly Park to support BCOP’s 80th anniversary fundraising appeal for new dementia-friendly sensory streets.
The visit took place on Friday 17 April and gave the MP the opportunity to meet residents and staff, tour the home’s facilities and learn more about the charity’s plans to create additional reminiscence-focused environments for people living with dementia.
During the visit, discussions focused on the changing nature of residential care, increasing pressures facing the care sector and the importance of providing meaningful, interactive environments for older people.
Mr Carns toured several of Neville Williams House’s specialist spaces, including the popular Forget-Me-Not Pub, the home’s dedicated sensory room and the newly created Captain’s Table nautical-themed dining room. He also viewed the almost completed cinema room and heard more about plans for a future sensory street development.
The MP praised the welcoming atmosphere within the home and highlighted the importance of spaces that help residents continue enjoying social experiences with family and friends.
BCOP is currently celebrating its 80th anniversary year and is fundraising to develop additional sensory streets across its homes. These specially designed areas help residents living with dementia reconnect with familiar memories and experiences through immersive, interactive environments inspired by past decades.
During the visit, Mr Carns also spent time speaking with residents and staff and offered to support BCOP’s fundraising campaign through his own media channels.
The MP described Neville Williams House as a unique place and expressed interest in returning for the official opening of the home’s new cinema room.
