Awaab’s Law, named in memory of two-year-old Awaab Ishak who tragically died in 2020 due to prolonged exposure to mould in his family’s social housing, has officially come into effect in the United Kingdom. This new legislation aims to ensure that social landlords take prompt and effective action to tackle damp and mould in tenants’ homes, marking a significant shift in housing policy and tenant protection.
Awaab’s Law sets specific timeframes for social landlords to investigate and address complaints related to damp and mould. Under the new law:
- Social landlords must respond to reports of damp and mould within a set number of days.
- Repairs or remedial work must be carried out within a specified period once issues have been identified.
- Failure to comply can result in enforcement action, including fines and other penalties.
The law empowers tenants to hold their landlords accountable, ensuring that health and safety concerns are no longer ignored or delayed.
