We are excited to share this fantastic testimonial from one of our members, highlighting the real value of apprenticeships!
At BSHP, we’re always looking for ways to support our members. Through our recent partnership with Jeff Weir and AKG Learning, we’re delighted to provide bespoke support for partners who want to embed apprenticeships and CIH qualifications into their workforce development strategy.
It’s great to already see our members engaging with Jeff and the AKG team to explore tailored training solutions and access fully funded opportunities.
Testimonial
In my 20s, I made the decision to pursue not one, but two apprenticeships – both of which turned out to be pivotal in shaping my career in housing. First, I completed a Level 5 Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care Leadership and Management, followed by a Level 4 Apprenticeship in Housing. At the time, adult apprenticeships were still surrounded by a certain stigma – often seen as something for school-leavers rather than established professionals. My experience, however, proved the opposite.
I was already working in roles I enjoyed, and the apprenticeship model allowed me to keep doing the job I loved while gaining structured, recognised qualifications. One was an NVQ and one a CIH certification. This combination of on-the-job learning with the support of visiting trainers was exactly the style of professional development that worked for me. The trainers came into my workplace, observed my work in real time, and provided feedback that was immediately applicable. I did have to complete essays during my own time, however I was awarded 20% of my working week (1 day in 5) to work on my apprenticeship. My employer had to sign up to this pledge when I took on both apprenticeships.
Both apprenticeships were genuinely rewarding. I particularly enjoyed the British Values piece of work, which encouraged me to reflect on how principles such as democracy, mutual respect, and the rule of law play out in day-to-day professional settings. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the social context in which housing and care services operate.
The End Point Gateway Assessment was another standout. It was thorough, well-structured, and gave me the opportunity to showcase the skills and knowledge I’d developed over the course. It felt like a meaningful milestone rather than just a formality.
When I undertook these apprenticeships around ten years ago, each programme lasted 18 months. Now, I understand that similar qualifications can be completed in as little as 12 months, making them even more accessible for busy professionals.
There’s still a perception that apprenticeships are only for young people starting out in their careers. My experience shows otherwise. As an adult learner, I found them flexible, practical, and directly relevant to my work. They allowed me to gain nationally recognised qualifications without stepping away from my role, and the process improved my confidence and skill set.
For me, adult apprenticeships were not just an alternative to traditional study – they were the best option. They combined workplace learning, professional mentoring, and academic development into a single, highly effective package. Ten years on, I still consider them one of the best career decisions I’ve ever made. In my view, they’re fab – and I’d recommend them to any adult looking to progress in their career while staying in work.
I would do another apprenticeship in a heartbeat and am not against seeking level 7 opportunities currently!
